Project Citizen - Syrian Refugee  Support Bake Sale

Our class' last ELA/Social Studies unit was Project Citizen, which asked kids to consider solutions to problems they were most concerned about. One group expressed concerned about the Syrian Refugee Crisis and spent the unit learning about it, as well as considering ways they could help.

The group decided that they wanted to have a bake sale in order to make donations of water to Syria via a group they learned about during their research called Hand to Hand for Syria. Even weeks after the unit was over, their commitment led to a bake sale that exceeded their goal of $200! They were able to raise $320! Way to go Vincent, Lina, Sophia, Zoe, and Sawyer!

Graduation Song

Fifth Grade Graduation Song
*Remixed from “Best Day of My Life” by American Authors

An awesome year at PS 8
We sing this song to celebrate
Wo-o-o-o-o-oh, wo-o-o-o-o-oh
We learned so much, we got it right
We got along, we hardly fight
Wo-o-o-o-o-oh, wo-o-o-o-o-oh

I'm never gonna look back- Woah
Never gonna give it up- No
Please don't make me go

These were the best years of my life
My li-i-i-i-i-ife
These were the best years of my life
My li-i-i-i-i-ife

(2 counts of 8)

I got to hang out with my friends
The good times seem to never end
Wo-o-o-o-o-oh, wo-o-o-o-o-oh
But all the possibilities
That gave us opportunities
Wo-o-o-o-o-oh, wo-o-o-o-o-oh

I'm never gonna look back- Woah
Never gonna give it up- No
Just don't make me go

These were the best years of my life
My li-i-i-i-i-ife
These were the best years of my life
My li-i-i-i-i-ife

(2 counts of 8)

Sixth grade is calling,  we gotta go now
I feel it in my soul (soul)
My heart is shining so bright
The 5th grade dance is tonight
I say we start to go (go)

These were the best years of my life
My li-i-i-i-i-ife
These were the best years of my life
My li-i-i-i-i-ife

This is gonna be, this is gonna be, this is gonna be
The best day of my life
Everything is looking up, everybody up now
These were the best years of my life
My li-i-i-i-i-ife

Dear Families,

We would like to welcome you to class 5-302!  We are excited to have the opportunity to get to know you and your child this year.  There are a few important pieces of information we would like to share with you at this time.

Attached to this letter you will find a parent survey and dismissal form, which we ask that you return with your child by Tuesday, September 13th.  The parent survey will help us get to know your child and will also let us know how to get in touch with you.  The dismissal form lets us know where and with whom your child will be dismissed each day.  If your child’s dismissal varies day to day, please make sure you indicate that on the form.   Our dismissal time is 2:40.  We dismiss at the Poplar St exit of the new building (closest to the gym).

We use email as our main form of communication to parents and we have a joint teacher email address for the two of us, which is BrandieandPatty@ps8brooklyn.org.  We feel that parent, student and teacher communication is key to promoting an educational environment conducive to learning, and we welcome parent emails. We try to check our email before and after school each day.  During teaching hours we are not able to answer emails.  We do not check our email past 5:30 pm.  If you have an urgent message for us, we ask that you call or email Eileen Carrier, our parent teacher coordinator.  Her email is eileen.carrier@ps8brooklyn.org.

We also have a class website that we use to post daily homework, monthly newsletters, weekly wordstudy words, updates and reminders, and other class-related documents that are helpful for students to access at home. Our class website is class5302.blogspot.com. We love technology and hope to use it a lot in our classroom this year.

We received the school supplies for the students who ordered them through the PTA.  If you did not order school supplies through the PTA, we’ve attached a list of items your child will need.  If you aren’t sure if you’ve ordered through the PTA, send us an email and we will let you know.

We would like to offer shared class snack as an option to students.  While some students choose to bring their own snack each day, others opt for the class snack.  We ask that if you plan on having your child eat the class snack, that you donate a healthy snack.  As of now, we have no snack to offer the class.

We plan on sending more information home in the near future so please make sure you return the attached forms by Tuesday.  Once again, welcome to class 5-302.  We are looking forward to working with you and your child this year.

Sincerely,

Brandie Hayes & Patty Cornacchia
