Unit 5 Resources - Multiplying and Dividing Fractions

To get an overview of the skills students will learn in this unit, please read the Overview Parent Letter for Unit 5 on the Bridges in Mathematics website.
Strategies for Multiplying A Whole Number by a Fraction
Use the strategy chart below to remind your child of the various strategies that could be used to multiply a whole number by a fraction. The simplest strategy is strategy # 1 - repeated addition, as it can be used for any fraction. We will revise the chart to only incude universal strategies that can work for equations with ANY fractions.

Students have not learned how to multiply a fraction by a fraction, so I would not emphasize strategy # 5. Although it seems simple in terms of calculation, it won't make sense to student conceptually.

Unit 5 Khan Academy Links
Below are Khan Academy links for skills taught in this unit, or previous units, that will help students. "Mastery Skills" are skills that your child should have mastered (be proficient in) by the end of this unit, whereas a "Developing Skill" is one that your child should be familiar, even if they aren't yet proficient with it yet.

Math Stations - January 9th
Place Value Station
After you finish the activity at your station, watch at least the first Khan Academy video. Then try a practice activity to see how well you can solve the problems. If you have enough time remaining, watch the other videos from this list. Remember, if you can't watch them all, you can always watch them at home!
